Description
Pirkai Avos: Volume 1 – Teachings from the First 3 Prokim, are treasured teachings which my grandfather, the gadol hador Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky (1891- 1986), shared on my radio show in 1982-1984. These timeless treasures are in Reb Yaakov’s eloquent Yiddish.
They were presented on my radio show during the sefira days, when customarily people to not listen to music. I thank my step grandmother, my bubbie, Rabbanit Hannah for insisting that my zede for the sake of my parnassa speak on the radio and share his invaluable teachings. In the 1980’s it was extremely rare for esteemed Rabbis to speak on the radio. The Rabbanit Hanna said to my grandfather, “If the Lubavitcher Rebbe can speak on the radio so can you as your grandson needs parnassa”. My helige holy Zede, my grandfather, Reb Yaakov always listened to my bubbie. What a privilege it was sitting and taping each word that came out of his holy mouth.
Pirkai Avos (Also Pirkei AvothPirkei Avot/Pirkei Avos/Pirke Aboth), (English as Chapters of the Fathers/Ethics of the Fathers) is a compilation of the ethical teachings and maxims of the Rabbis of the Mishnaic period. It is part of didactic Jewish ethical Musar literature.
When we speak of Pirkai Avos, chapter of the fathers, we are essentially speaking about the ethics and the teaching of all of our fathers, from the mishnaic time until our present day.
For those who do not understand Yiddish, it is advised to sit next to someone who speaks Yiddish and to hear a translation of Reb Yaakov’s insights of Pirkai Avos.
